How your files are backed up
The Recover window has been designed to show you the path that leads to where your information is stored. In the window
above, you will notice how a folder named 'Backgrounds' was backed
up. This folder is stored on the Macintosh Hard Drive of 'This
Computer' (simply refers to the specific computer from which files
are being backed up).
All of the specific files that were backed up within the 'Backgrounds'
folder are listed directly below it. It shows the date the backup
was performed along with the time.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Your system wide preference setting defaults to keeping 1 older
copy of each file on our server. If changes were made to each
of the background files shown above and another backup was run,
you would then see an additional copy of each file stored in this
area. The date and time would indicate which was your most recent
copy. If you prefer to overwrite the file each time (as opposed
to saving several copies), you can do so by going to the Configure
Backup Sets window, selecting the folder, and clicking on the
Options button. |

The arrows to the left simply indicate whether the information
in each of these areas is expanded or not. If the arrow points
down, it indicates that the level is expanded. At any time, you
can collapse the levels simply by clicking on any of the lines.
The same action is required if you would like to expand (open)
the levels. Individual files will not have an arrow beside them.
Rebuild File List from Server feature
This specific feature exists for several important reasons:
- If you have had a major system crash or some other disaster in
your organization, you will need to recover all of the files that
you had previously stored on our servers. To do so, you will be
required to re-install BackJack and rebuild your list of backed
up folders from our server using this feature.
- You can also use this feature if you've changed your computer
ID and then want to go back to your old ID. 'Rebuild List from
Server' will recover the files stored under your previous ID.
If you click on this button, you will receive a prompt indicating
"Rebuild list from server will replace the current list with all
items backed up during previous sessions. Are you sure you wish
to continue?". You have the option of cancelling your action if
you do not wish to proceed.
If you do wish to proceed, BackJack will begin the process of
rebuilding your file list and place the information in your Recover
window.
Set Delete Date feature
You may recall in the 'Configure Backup Sets' window, you were
given the option of removing files or folders. If you were attempting
to remove a file or folder that had previously been backed up,
you received a prompt indicating that you could set the delete
date now or do so at a later time in the Recover window.
Here is where you are once again given the option to delete files
or folders that you currently have stored with us.
Why would you want to delete files or folders?
- you may have information stored on our servers that you no longer
wish to keep there
- you have deleted a file or folder from your hard drive that is
no longer getting backed up; however, there still exist copies
on our server that you don't want to continue to store
|
|
|
|
|
|
You can set a delete date for a folder or individual files stored
within that folder. If you set a delete date for a folder, it
will automatically mark each file within that folder for deletion. |

|
ACTION: Enter the specific date (in the format shown) that you want
the file to be deleted from our server.
You will notice that this date appears in the Recover window in
the column entitled 'Delete Date' allowing you to keep track of
when it will be deleted. This item will be deleted from our server
during your next scheduled connection.
If you try to set a delete date for an item that is currently
being backed up by a Backup Set, you will be prompted to confirm
that you want to set a date. Why? If you delete it from the server
now, but it is still part of your backup set, then it will get
backed up again during your next scheduled backup. Therefore,
you will want to delete it from your hard drive first.
If you have deleted a file or folder from your hard drive that
is part of a backup set, BackJack will automatically put a delete date in this area for
you next time it tries to back up that set. For example, the last
3 files shown below were deleted from the 'Backgrounds' folder
on this user's hard drive on June 15/98. BackJack automatically
entered the delete date as July 15/98 - one month from the date
of deletion (as per preferences setting).

If you wish to remove a delete date that you have set (or BackJack
has set automatically for you) for a specific folder or file,
simply highlight it and remove the text from the selected box
by tabbing or pressing the Return key. |

Delete Marked Files Feature
This feature does simply that! It was a feature that we implemented
primarily for our demo users. As a demo user, if you reach the
2 MB limit of file storage, you can simply come to this screen,
delete files immediately and continue testing BackJack.
ACTION: Simply mark the files for deletion by using the checkbox and
click on the 'Delete Marked Files' button.
Recovering Files
Now let's take a look at the most important feature of this window
... recovering files. You will notice that we allow you to 'mark'
files for recovery.
|
|
|
|
|
|
You can mark an entire folder for recovery (which will automatically
mark all of the files within that folder) OR you can mark specific files within a folder. |
|

|
ACTION: To mark a folder for recovery, simply click in the MARK checkbox to the right
of the folder.
ACTION: To mark a specific file within a folder, simply click in the MARK checkbox to the right
of the file.
Here's how the window would appear if you wanted to recover the
file 'Background.gif'. You will notice that even though you only
marked that one file for recovery, 'This Computer', 'Macintosh
HD', 'Desktop Folder' and 'Backgrounds' folders are also selected.
This is simply BackJack's way of marking the path for recovery.
 (January 1999).iso/Net Innovators/BackJack™ Internet Backup/Documentation/Images/recoverfoldernew.gif)
You can 'Unmark' a file or folder at any time, simply by clicking
in the checkbox to deselect. For your convenience, we have also
included an 'Unmark All' button that allow you to easily unmark
selected files/folders.
ACTION: Once you have determined the files/folders that you wish to
recover, mark them using the procedure discussed above. Then,
click on the RECOVER MARKED ITEMS button.
Here's a sample screen of what will appear next:
 (January 1999).iso/Net Innovators/BackJack™ Internet Backup/Documentation/Images/recoverfolder.gif)
BackJack will ask you to determine:
- where you want to store your Recovery folder
- the name of your Recovery Folder - you will notice that it defaults
to the name BackJack Recovery and the specific date you are recovering
information
ACTION: Go ahead and choose a location and rename the Recovery Folder
if you wish. Once you have done that, you can click on SAVE. If
you do not wish to recover any files at this time, click CANCEL.
BackJack will then begin the process of recovering your files/folders.
Once your files/folders have been recovered, they will no longer
appear 'marked' in the Recover window. They will be available
for access by simply navigating to where you saved the Recovery
folder on your computer.
